Prophet Hud (عليه السلام) — Messenger to the People of ʿĀd
Introduction
After the time of Prophet Nuh (عليه السلام), generations passed, and humanity once again began drifting away from the worship of Allah alone. Among the descendants of Nuh came another noble Prophet: Hud (عليه السلام). He was chosen by Allah to guide the people of ʿĀd, a powerful nation that became arrogant because of their strength, wealth, and advanced civilization.
The People of ʿĀd
The nation of ʿĀd lived in the region of Al-Ahqaf, a desert area between Yemen and Oman. The Qur’an describes them as physically tall, powerful, and skilled builders:
“Do you build on every high place a sign in vanity? And do you take for yourselves fine palaces, as though you will live forever?” (Surah Ash-Shuʿarā, 26:128–129)
Prophet Hud’s Call
Prophet Hud (عليه السلام) was raised among them — a man of noble character, honesty, and wisdom. He reminded them gently but firmly:
“O my people! Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Will you not then fear Him?” (Surah al-Aʿrāf, 7:65)
Rejection and Arrogance
Instead of listening, the people of ʿĀd mocked him. They said:
“O Hud! You have not brought us any clear proof. We shall not abandon our gods just because you say so, nor do we believe in you.” (Surah Hud, 11:53)
They accused him of being foolish and even threatened him. Yet, Prophet Hud (عليه السلام) remained patient and fearless, declaring:
“I call Allah to witness, and you bear witness too, that I am free from all that you associate with Him besides Him. So plot against me, all of you together, and then give me no respite. Indeed, I have put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” (Surah Hud, 11:54–56)
The Punishment of ʿĀd
When his people continued in defiance, Allah’s punishment came. First, a drought struck their land. Instead of repenting, they prayed to their idols. Then, Allah sent a furious wind:
“So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune, to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life. But the punishment of the Hereafter will be more humiliating, and they will not be helped.” (Surah Fussilat, 41:16)
This wind raged for seven nights and eight days continuously, destroying everything in its path. The mighty nation of ʿĀd was reduced to nothing.
“So do you see any trace of them left behind?” (Surah al-Ḥāqqah, 69:8)
The Success of Prophet Hud
While his people perished, Prophet Hud (عليه السلام) and those who believed in him were saved by Allah’s mercy. This was his true success — not in worldly power, but in steadfast faith, unwavering patience, and fulfilling the mission entrusted to him.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Mentioning Hud
The story of Prophet Hud carried such weight that even Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reflected deeply upon it.
It is reported that Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) once said: “O Messenger of Allah, I see you have aged quickly.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Surah Hud and its sisters have made me age.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi)
Lessons from Prophet Hud (عليه السلام)
1. Reliance on Allah – True strength lies in trusting Allah, not in material power.
2. Humility vs. Arrogance – Arrogance leads to destruction, while humility leads to salvation.
3. Gratitude for Blessings – Wealth and strength are tests; they must be used with gratitude, not pride.
4. Steadfastness in Faith – Even if opposed by many, one must remain firm on truth.
5. The Reality of Accountability – No nation, no matter how powerful, can escape Allah’s judgment.
Inspired by Deen – Living the Message Today
The story of Prophet Hud (عليه السلام) is not just history. It is a reminder for us today in our homes, families, and communities. Arrogance, materialism, and forgetfulness of Allah can creep into our lives if we are not careful.
Conclusion
Prophet Hud (عليه السلام) stood as a beacon of truth among a nation of arrogance. His excellence lay in his patience, courage, and reliance on Allah. Though the people of ʿĀd perished, his message lives on in the Qur’an — a warning and a mercy for all generations.
May Allah allow us to take heed from his story, avoid arrogance, and live with gratitude and humility.
Allah knows best.
