The Kaaba and Al Masjid al Haram
A history told by the Qur’an and authentic hadith
In Makkah stands the Kaaba, the Sacred House at the heart of Al-Masjid al-Haram. Its story is more than the story of a building. The Qur’an calls the House at Makkah the first house of worship established for humanity, blessed and a guidance for the worlds. Source: Qur’an 3:96
Hajar and Ismail in the Valley of Makkah
Before the House was raised by Ibrahim (Abraham) and Ismail (Ishmael), Ibrahim brought Hajar and their young son Ismail to the valley of Makkah. According to a narration from Ibn Abbas, there were no people or water there at the time. When their water ran out, Hajar searched between the hills of Safa and Marwah. The narration describes how Allah provided the water of Zamzam and connects her journey to the sa‘i that pilgrims perform between the two hills. Ibrahim’s prayer for his family in that valley also appears in the Qur’an. Sources: Sahih al-Bukhari 3364; Qur’an 14:37
Ibrahim and Ismail Raise the Foundations
The Qur’an tells us that Ibrahim and Ismail raised the foundations of the House together. As they worked, they prayed for Allah to accept their deed. Allah also instructed them to purify His House for those who circle it in tawaf and those who pray there. Source: Qur’an 2:125–127
Allah directed Ibrahim to proclaim the pilgrimage, saying that people would come from distant places. The Qur’an also describes pilgrimage to the House as a duty for those who are able to make the journey. Sources: Qur’an 22:26–27; Qur’an 3:97
The Sacred Mosque in the Time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Qur’an later directed Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the believers to turn toward Al-Masjid al-Haram in prayer. Muslims around the world continue to face that direction when they pray. Source: Qur’an 2:144–150
A narration in Sahih al-Bukhari tells us that when the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah at its conquest, idols stood around the Kaaba. He struck them with a stick while reciting words about truth coming and falsehood vanishing. Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 2478
These Qur’anic verses and authentic narrations give families a way to learn the story of the Sacred House together: Hajar’s trust in Allah, Ibrahim and Ismail’s work, the call to pilgrimage, and the place of Al-Masjid al-Haram in Muslim prayer.
