Welcoming the Sacred Month of Muharram
A Time of Reflection, Renewal, and Mercy
The blessed month of Muharram marks the beginning of a new Islamic year. It is one of the four sacred months mentioned by Allah in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)
Among these months, Muharram is particularly special and virtuous. It is known as “Shahrullah al-Muharram” – the month of Allah. This rare attribution shows the immense importance of this time, and it offers us a precious opportunity to return to Allah, seek forgiveness, and renew our intentions.
The Significance of Muharram
Muharram is not just the first month of the Islamic calendar—it is a time to reconnect with faith, perform extra acts of worship, and reflect deeply. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best fasting after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Muharram.” (Sahih Muslim)
Among the days of Muharram, the Day of ‘Ashura (the 10th) holds great reward. Fasting on this day expiates the sins of the previous year. SubhanAllah, how merciful is our Lord!
Lessons from Karbala
The month of Muharram also reminds us of the tragedy of Karbala, where the beloved grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, Imam Husayn ibn Ali (RA), was martyred. His stand for justice, truth, and faith is not forgotten.
As we remember this event, we must reflect on our own choices and character. Are we upholding truth in our daily lives? Are we living by our values as Muslims in our homes and communities?
May Allah forgive us, guide us to what is best, and allow us to always stand for what pleases Him. Allah knows best.
A Time to Renew Our Intentions
As the new Islamic year begins, it’s a good time to:
- Make sincere du’a for ourselves and the Ummah.
- Increase in fasting, charity, and Qur’an recitation.
- Improve our akhlaq (character) and dealings with others.
- Reassess our goals—both in this dunya and for the akhirah.

Closing Reflection
Let us not let this month pass like any other. Let us fast, repent, give, and reflect. And above all, let us make sincere du’a:
“O Allah, guide us to the straight path, forgive our sins, and bless us in this new year. May You guide us to what is best. Indeed, You know best.”
Allahumma Ameen.
