Hajj & Arafat Day – A Journey of Devotion, Unity, and Dua

What is Hajj?

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam—a sacred pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah, obligatory for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to perform it at least once in their lifetime. Hajj is not just a physical journey; it is a deeply spiritual transformation that symbolizes submission, sacrifice, unity, and humility before Allah (SWT).

It commemorates the trials and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), Hajar (RA), and Ismail (AS), and the life and guidance of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The Rituals of Hajj – A Step-by-Step Reflection

1. Ihram – The Garment of Equality
Pilgrims wear two pieces of plain white cloth (for men) and modest dress for women. It represents purity, humility, and the equality of all believers before Allah.

2. Tawaf – Circling the Kaaba
Pilgrims walk around the Kaaba seven times, honoring the unity of Allah and the legacy of the prophets.

3. Sa’i – Walking Between Safa and Marwah
This ritual recalls Hajar’s desperate search for water, reflecting faith and perseverance. Pilgrims walk seven times between these two hills.

4. Mina – The City of Tents
On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims head to Mina, where they spend the night in devotion and remembrance.

5. Arafat – The Pinnacle of Hajj
On the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims gather at the plain of Arafat—the most sacred day of Hajj. They stand in prayer from noon to sunset, asking Allah for mercy, forgiveness, and guidance. It is the day Prophet Muhammad (SAW) gave his Farewell Sermon.

“For those not on Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafat is highly recommended. It expiates sins of the past and coming year (Sahih Muslim).”

6. Muzdalifah – Under the Stars
After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah, collect pebbles, and sleep under the open sky in reflection.

7. Rami al-Jamarat – Stoning the Devil
At Mina, they stone three pillars symbolizing Iblis (Satan), rejecting evil and reaffirming faith.

8. Qurbani – The Sacrifice
In remembrance of Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Muslims around the world perform Qurbani, distributing meat to the poor.

9. Tawaf al-Ifadah & Final Rites
Pilgrims return to the Kaaba for another round of Tawaf and complete final rituals, including shaving their heads (men) or trimming hair (women).
