The Spirit of Eid al-Adha – Sacrifice, Legacy, and Gratitude

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is observed on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and marks the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage. It commemorates the obedience and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) upon Allah’s command. However, Allah replaced Ismail (AS) with a ram, signifying the acceptance of sincere faith and submission. This day reminds us that true piety lies in obeying Allah, even when it is difficult.

Dual Sacrifice: Between Hajj and Eid

During Hajj, pilgrims perform the act of sacrifice after standing on Arafat and completing other rituals. Simultaneously, Muslims around the globe perform Qurbani in remembrance of the same act. It is this unity in action and intention that brings the global Muslim community together.

Allah says in the Qur'an:
“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him.” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:37).

What is Qurbani and Why Do We Do It?

Qurbani, or Udhiyah, is the ritual sacrifice of a livestock animal—sheep, goat, cow, or camel—performed after Eid salah. The practice is rooted in the Sunnah and symbolizes our willingness to give up something valuable for the sake of Allah. The sacrificed animal must meet certain conditions of age and health and must be treated with mercy.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of sacrifice than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves (to be weighed).” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3126).

Explaining Key Hadith on Sacrifice

1. Ibn Majah (Hadith 3126):
“It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim. For every hair of the Qurbani, you will receive a reward.”
→ This Hadith emphasizes the spiritual reward in every part of the animal offered in sacrifice, reaffirming the importance of sincerity.

2. Tirmidhi (Hadith 1493):
“The son of Adam does not do any action on the Day of Sacrifice more beloved to Allah than the shedding of blood.”
→ This Hadith reinforces the virtue of Qurbani and places it above all other good deeds on this special day.

How to Divide Qurbani Meat – With Authentic Reference

The Sunnah teaches us to divide the meat into three parts:
- One-third for yourself and your family
- One-third for friends and relatives
- One-third for the poor and needy

This is based on the narration:
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (RA) said: “The Prophet (SAW) said: Eat of it, and feed the poor and store some.” (Sahih Bukhari 5569, Sahih Muslim 1966)

This division promotes community care, generosity, and social balance in the spirit of Eid.

Dua to Recite at Time of Qurbani

Before slaughtering the animal, one should recite:
“Bismillahi Allahu Akbar, Allahumma haadha minka wa laka.”
(In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is from You and for You.)

It is also Sunnah to make the intention and say:
“O Allah, accept this from me and from the family of Muhammad (SAW).” (Sahih Muslim 1967).

Celebrating Eid with Purpose

Even if you're not on Hajj, your celebration, sacrifice, and duas hold immense value. Use this time to reflect on the lessons of submission, obedience, and compassion.

Eid al-Adha is not just about rituals—it’s about the remembrance of Allah, serving others, and carrying forward the legacy of faith.

Let your Qurbani be a source of joy for your family, friends, and those in need.
