Rabi al-Awwal: The Blessed Third Month of the Islamic Calendar

The Islamic year, also known as the Hijri year, is built upon the lunar cycle, consisting of 12 months as mentioned in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)

Among these twelve months, Rabi al-Awwal (also called Rabi I or Rabiul Awwal) holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims. It is the third month of the Islamic calendar and is most notably remembered as the month in which our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born, a mercy to all of creation.

The Prophet ﷺ also migrated from Makkah to Madinah in this month, a pivotal event that marked the beginning of the Muslim Ummah’s strength and unity. This migration is so significant that the Hijri calendar itself begins from the year of the Hijrah.

3. The Passing of the Prophet ﷺ
In the same month, after fulfilling his mission, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his Lord. This bittersweet reality makes Rabi al-Awwal a month of both joy and reflection—joy for his blessed arrival and sorrow for his departure.

Lessons from the Life of the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ himself encouraged us not to overindulge in the past with excessive celebration, but rather to follow his Sunnah and live by the Qur’an.

“I have left among you two matters, which if you hold fast to, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet.” (Muwatta Malik, Hadith 1594)

Thus, the real way to honor Rabi al-Awwal is by:
- Increasing in sending salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ.
- Striving to embody his character, as Allah says: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.” (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21)
- Reflecting on his Seerah (biography) and teaching it to our children.

Rabi al-Awwal: A Time for Reflection and Gratitude

Rabi al-Awwal is not a month of rituals invented by culture, but a time to truly reconnect with the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ. It’s an opportunity to:
- Renew our love for the Prophet ﷺ by praying and increasing our connection to Allah.
- Increase in charity and good deeds, as he was the most generous of people.
- Strengthen our connection to the Qur’an, since the Prophet ﷺ lived and embodied its teachings.
